Puppy Training

Set your dog up for life in a few short adorable months

Congratulations on your puppy!  Puppyhood is the time from birth to just about six months when those dog’s adult teeth come in.  Before those adult teeth our dogs have gentle malleable little minds and bodies.  Once those adult teeth come in, your puppy is physically and behaviorally an adolescent and they start acting more cautiously and react more intensely to things than they ever did before.  We begin to see the behavioral issues that we did not iron out in puppyhood.  Our job is to lay a great foundation for our dogs in puppyhood, adolescence will reveal how good of a job we did.

Here’s some important things to know…

It’s about socialization.  More than anything, puppyhood is about giving our dogs as many new experiences and making as many new friends as possible.  We are playing a numbers game and the more the merrier.

Potty training and around the home training are a big deal.  This is our chance to establish good habits (or bad ones) that will last a lifetime.

Workout that mouth.  Our puppies are programmed to explore the world with their teeth and for a very good reason.  Dogs only have a few short months to learn how to be gentle and kind when using their mouth before it becomes a powerful sharp crushing device.  They need plenty of opportunities to exercise their mouths both on appropriate chews toys and living creatures that provide feedback, like other puppies or your hands.

We only have to do this once.  If we do this right, we’ll have a wonderful companion for our dog’s entire life, but the opposite applies as well.

First, I recommend that you read this tell-it-like-it-is article I wrote called  What Every Puppy Owner Needs to be Training Right NOW!

Now, on to the programs…

These programs are for puppies between the ages of 7 weeks and around 5 months (when those adult teeth start coming in).

Puppy Playtime

If you want to do some socializing with other puppies in a clean supervised environment, we host weekly puppy playtime at Eastside Veterinary Associates of Newcastle.  Contact them here.

Puppy Life Skills

There is a group and one-on-one option for this program.  Suitable for puppies 7 weeks to 5 months.

The group class option combines socialization, critical life skills, and basic manners into a single 5 week course.  This is a great starting point on the path to a well-rounded, polite, confident dog.  Class size is kept small, around 4 dogs, so that every student gets individualized attention.  Classes are held at Eastside Veterinary Associates of Newcastle.

The one-one-one option takes place in-home and covers topics like home-alone training, potty training, manners, and greetings.
